Pulsar Synthesis | A Microsound recipe by Curtis Roads
Before anything else I'd like to stress that this video was triggered by the Plume from Hieroglyphic, but doesn't feature it. It's NOT intended as click-bait, it's an educational video. If you took the bait, go watch DivKid or Tom Churchill's walkthrough (linked above).
The concept is from Curtis Roads Microsound book. I read about the subject and tried to patch a few experiments with various results. Some good, some bad, and some turned out to be amazing. This video also fits my goals for 2024, where it's not always necessary to get yourself a new module when your existing modules still have plenty to offer. Happy patching!

Oct Tone | by the Glasgow Synth Guild
Переглядів 1,7 тис.19 годин тому
I had a short moment of confusion when the Oct Tone was presented to a wide audience. I knew the Octone from Qu-Bit, but nobody shared a bit of how this came to be, except that it was a Jason Lim design. It's obvious the new Oct Tone also comes from the people behind Instruo and I learned that the Glasgow Synth Guild is an entity that manufactures modules/hardware. So Instruo is now a GSG clien...
Stereofication | feat. Makenoise 'Bruxa', QPAS SmilePass and XAOC Minsk
Переглядів 1,7 тис.День тому
After the release of Bruxa two days ago, I noticed a lot of comments about it being a mono delay in a world that quickly goes stereo. So in this video, I'll use the concept of a mono delay and check out two options to stereofy it (besides running it through a stereo delay, granulator or reverb). QPAS smilepass is an 'allpass' filter which can produce 'false' stereo effects. XAOC Minsk really pe...

Foreword. I made this series as a documentary. A 'how it was done 50 years ago'. So it's not about luring you into the exclusive 4U world, it's more a tutorial about making cool sounds with very limited resources. I agreed to make a tutorial series if I could borrow the set for a week. Feel free to skip it, but I hope you'll check it out if you have a few spare minutes. This is the first video ...
Paperface 50 | Serge Origins | Episode 02 | OSC and OSC+
Переглядів 447День тому
The Helios panel has two VCO's, named OSC and OSC . The extended VCO also features a pulse out with PWM and three noise outputs. They have three (3!) 1V/OCT inputs, where two are attenuverted. The Sine outputs have a waveshaper CV. Simple, but amazing and really powerful for all kinds of modulation scenarios.

The SSG is one of the most versatile utilities in modern synthesis. At first glance it's just a triangle wave (smooth) and a sample/hold circuit, but it can perform a lot of different tasks. The SSG also has a modern V2, the GTO. So this video may be of some use for new SSG and GTO owners in 4U and 3U.

I didn't expect too much from this episode, just filtering a bit of noise, triggers and self-oscillation on the filter. But it made me understand why Serge is so often used to make feedback patches. My borrowed Paperface 50 also features the Tempo di Roma panel, a clever classic sequencer featuring two 4-step sequencers, each with three rows of CV values (roughly equal to notes), a gate row when a stage is reached, and stage selectors that double as keys and length controls. This episode is about the original Serge Triple Waveshaper, that can be used both in series as in parallel. Another great vid-thanks! A fellow Strega lover here and I thankfully don't have the GAS for a Bruxa just yet, though I'm curious to find out more about the differences. One thing you mentioned is that you don't have to 'run sounds through Strega's 'dirty' pre-amp'. Is the pre amp on Strega really that dirty? I thought it was just the signal being mashed up in the Time/Filter but maybe not? Do you find Bruxa is 'cleaner' by comparison?

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory 12 годин тому

I am about to finish a Strega video where I use the preamp to run my guitar through it. It definitely saturates, which is what you'd want. So 'dirty' may not have been the best term. But it's also cool to take one of the waveform outputs and feedback it through the pre-amp and clip it. Bruxa doesn't have the pre, so incoming sounds will be clean.

Sometimes you'd just want a tight kick/hat as a foundation so you can dance to it. Chasing lights is a simple gate pattern sequencer with switches for every step. Super simple. With all due respect, the joke of the mono witch sounds like you don’t have a valid reason to explain why it’s mono. So I guess the video is more about finding a workaround to an issue rather than explaining why it’s not an issue? I don’t blame obviously you since you didn’t make the module, but I find Make Noise decision strange, considering all their recent modules are stereo. And I find their lack of explanation even more problematic. I feel like a simple rationale would go a long way. Now they don’t owe anyone an explanation, but one would be nice anyway, for the fans like me, who feel like they reluctantly have to pass on the module.

Panharmonium is beautiful, it's what you'd expect from a spectral resynthesizer but it gives you a lot more. I think the Pan will check all of your boxes.

If you don’t like the sounds, probably not for you! 😅 If you like Cortini then you can appreciate usage of noise floor in composition. I love Strega because it can howl like a fucking Banshee, or whisper like a ghost trying to take over the space between stations on your radio. I’m using Strega to marry vocals/guitar to my patch- so wicked! When it’s not featured I create custom noise floors that change pitch and sync with my rig- just a pinch adds heaps of unique character every pass. Haven’t used it as a synth yet, but I’d sick it on hats or metallic percussion in a second. I’ve even used it on Aux channel in my DAW mixer, running soft synths through it and, again, merging them with my rigs’ modulations. In practice I recommend applying judiciously, utilizing absorb and filter, and maybe some EQ in post when recording. It’s a beast to be tamed or unleashed, and if it were for everyone it wouldn’t be released pre-order only, right? Big ups!

I understand and appreciate what you mean but I try not to think in problems (doesn't always work). When I have a stereo source going to e.g. Erbe-Verb, I use a mono sum (or one channel) and keep the source stereo in the mix. That's easy. When a stereo source goes to a mono device, let's say a Soma Lyra-8 FX, you'd sum to mono with all kind of eh.. challenges (problems) like cancellation and phasing so I would process only the L or R channel. When you return the wet sound it's up to you to decide if the result is any good. When it's not, a tool like Minsk could help.

I’ve considered buying a second erbverb so it can do stereo. It’s older so there’s an excuse. I had honestly hoped they’d announce a 2nd version with stereo in, instead they announced a new color and a final print run. And at least the erbverb outputs stereo. I really don’t know what the excuse from the Bruxa could be though. It’s nice that others are happy forced doing things a certain way, but the lack of explanation is rough for me. If I found out that it would require a second processor and cost 2x as much, now all of a sudden I totally understand and empathize with this decision. But from my lame consumer perspective, until they explain otherwise, I’m stuck just being frustrated they didn’t add a few more inputs and outputs to do stereo. It would have gone a long way showing how it’s different from Strega too. And hey, maybe their algorithm couldn’t do any kind of ping pong effect, that’s cool, skip that option and just keep it a dual signal input same effect output. Also I think this lacks a feedback loop send, which makes sense based on how I understand it works, but that even if I bought a second one for stereo, it can probably never do a ping pong delay effect (at least not without removing what makes it sound the way it does). This makes me doubly sad at the missed opportunity for this rather unique effect. The only thing I can fathom is they just don’t think it will sell well since folks already have a Strega, so let’s not bother to change much code etc. But I also get I could totally be wrong. Could be they are using real filters with digital chips of some kind. Might make it harder for stereo without some serious workarounds. I totally get there’s probably a good explanation. But I guess I’m too used to companies offering them. Edit: I just want to add, in case it wasn’t clear, I have a lot of respect for Make Noise. I’m sure there was a good reason. I just get way too into stereo.

This is my issue also. ALthough I like stereophony as well (who doesn’t) mono brings a focused signal. In the modular world the use of (stereo) reverberation is a fixed part of the signal path of the whole patch. With a stereo module the sound always gets diffused, muffled. If, in a mix you want the signal to be only or primarily on one channel it’s disappointing. It also makes me lazy because I don’t have to think about a wide and rich sound. So, being a composer of electroacoustic music, and mixing a lot with electronic sources, I have no problems with mono sound sources.

@@MrEarlabs I’ve yet to encounter a stereo effect that I couldn’t also run mono outside of effects specifically designed to widen the imaging field (wideners, specific dimensional choruses that might sound thin if mono summed). There’s no downside to including the option for stereo, but plenty to removing it, such as me having to spend 2x as much money just to get the stereo that I genuinely want, for reasons I can’t really fathom because none have been given. I really like Make Noise. I really do not like this particular decision, though I am aware that there are certainly plenty of possible GOOD reasons for it, since none have been given, I’m mostly stuck with a bitter taste in my mouth and having to decide if I want one (save money), two (get what I want), or none of this product (screw it, I’ll do it myself in a DAW or just live without because I’d rather have nothing than buy something at 2x the price just to get what I feel should have been there in the first place)

I love the Minsk with filtering with much resonance on the he 'wide' side chain. Sometimes I forget that I have patched that 'by default' and wonder, where the heck does that phasing sound comes form?

I am super happy with my Minsk. Haven't tried the mid/side features yet but I bet it can clean up a mix really nicely.

2:31 What do you love Strega for?

I often run it through a big chain of FX and it's just amazing. On its own it's a dirty noise maker, but I am still getting new textures, from it every time I patch it up. But I have to add that I racked my Strega so it's 'just' a module in a big system. With just a 0-Coast and a 0-Ctrl it can easily become too much.

WOW ! I really need to take some time to build me a serge/west coast system one of these days. i made some wavefolder boards to give them a try, and i guess next time i'll try an lpg. but i am realy intreeged by these voltage and slew processors. And i have to say i like the sound of those oscilators.... And i got a bunch of 3900's...

@@CinematicLaboratory you can, it's just a matter of time. start with a simple kit. i could send what you'd need to build something if your whilling to post a demo... i'll help if you have any trouble... i have tons of spare stuff i made for experiment, and/or didnt have time to build yet...

@@CinematicLaboratoryit‘s a different hobby, but you can totally do it. Soldering prepared DIY kits and open hardware (you can easily order PCBs and parts) is not difficult. Only designing your own circuits is on another level. However, you will see some white and blue smoke and you will pay for the learning curve with failed projects.

I am not familiar with Brian Eno's work except on early Roxy and Bowie, but I am sure I can relate to a true pioneer.

He is a bottomless well of pithy and thoughful music quotes. Besides being an incredibly intuitive artist, his unerring gravitation to textures and landscapes overlooked by the mass of trend setters, leaves me with the strong impression that you share with him far more than you realize. I suggest giving Taking Tiger Mountain by Stradegy, Here Come The Warm Jets and Another Green World. Then delve into Before And After Science and Nerve Net. These are a few of my favs. Eno tends to do his best work in collaboration with other strong talents. Robert Fripp has played on a number of projects as well as other folks. You won't be disappointed.
